Reductive cyclization of 4-(phenylsulfonylthio)azetidin-2-ones derived from penicillin has been achieved by Bi(0)/Bi(III)redox mediated electrolysis to afford 3-hydroxycephem and 2-exo-methylenepenam respectively.
