3-Formyl-3-cephems 3 were prepared by direct oxidation of 3-iodomethyl-3-cephems 2 in DMF in the presence of RhCl₃･H₂O/Al, VO(acac)₂, or VOSO₄ under an oxygen or an air atmosphere.
