Electroreduction of 5-chloro-7-nitro-2,2,4,6-tetramethyl-2,3-dihudrobenz[b]furan in a DMF-tBuOH/Bu4NBF4/Zn-Zn system effected conversion of the nitro group into amine and ensuing removal of the chlorine atom in one pot, leading to a pivotal precursor for ACAT inhibitors.
